Las Vegas: Desert Oasis
by Latrina Stokes
Escape. We had to get away from the unavoidable alterations, conflicting
bookings, and a thousand details gone wrong. Stress from the coming wedding
had threatened to end a friendship or send the bride to the hospital before
it was all over. The bachelorette party would come as sweet solace. So
although none of us had ever been to Sin City, we considered no other
destination. It paid off-the six of us had the time of our
twenty-something-year-old lives.
Day One. Two hours after arriving on Friday we were in the street. Our first
impression was akin to being dazzled by the lights of Time Square: sensory
overload on a grand scale. Marquees billed Elvis impersonators, drive-thru
wedding chapels, and strangely labeled "family-friendly" attractions. Never
mind all that. We just wanted to gamble. We hit the Bellagio, Luxor,
Ceasar's, as well as the MGM Grand and Palms: They all took our money.
Graduating from the hopeless slot machines, we were soon losing at roulette
and blackjack. Damn the house! Day one ended when the bride-to-be attempted
to wage her engagement ring.
Day Two. No one remembers how we got back to the hotel from the dance club.
Day Three. After a fabulous dinner we took the bride for a special dessert.
She wanted to know how many flavors of cheesecake were offered. No, it
wasn't cheesecake, only beef cakes on the menu. Three delectable flavors of
strippers with the most delicious bodies. What eye candy! We rented a
private room and told the guys to show us a good time. I would go into
particulars, but what goes on in Vegas stays in Vegas. Let's just say, we
completely forgot about the wedding for the first time in ten months.
