Clubbing in NYC
Club 13 was packed with people dancing to hip-hop beats. A golden glow
illuminated the walls and contemporary furniture. It was the middle of summer
and we had gone to the club to try and soak up the air-conditioned breeze, but
it was hotter inside than on the streets. My friends and I ordered some cold
bottles and soon we were sweating it out with the rest of the gyrating bodies.
In our group was a girl named Francesca who I had been eyeing ever since my
friend had started bringing her out. She was a short dark-haired girl who had
just moved to the city and did not speak much English. Ever since I had seen
her the week before, I had started listening to Italian tapes with the hopes
of impressing her with my communication skills. Moving through the crowd of
dancers I worked my way up to her. She turned around and leaned over saying, "Someone told me that's Leroy from Fame." Following
where she was pointing I spied a figure surrounded by people.
Dancing in the midst of a circle of gawking faces was indeed, Leroy (Gene
Anthony Ray). He was wearing a white suit and even though he looked a lot
older, he still had the moves. It was like watching a live version of Fame.
Everyone stood captivated as he ended his choreographed set diving down into
the splits. Rolling my eyes, I turned back to make my own dance moves on
Francesca, but she was no longer beside me. It wasn't until an hour later that
I found her. She was leaving the club with Leroy's arm around her waist. That
was the night Leroy stole my girl.
